Raw or undercooked oysters may contain harmful bacteria, viruses or toxins that cannot be detected by appearance, smell or taste. Eating them can cause serious illness and, rarely, death.
The risk is greater for people who are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, have liver disease, take acid-reducing medication or have certain chronic medical conditions. Oysters may also cause severe allergic reactions.
By signing below, I confirm that:
- I am 19 years of age or older.
- I understand and voluntarily accept the risks of eating raw or undercooked oysters.
- I do not have an oyster or molluscan-shellfish allergy.
- I am responsible for deciding whether my health makes raw-oyster consumption appropriate.
- I will follow all food-safety and beach-event instructions.
- I will not use an oyster knife or shuck oysters unless authorized and instructed by the Organizer.
I voluntarily choose to participate and, to the fullest extent permitted by law, release Secret Shucks Society, its organizers, staff, contractors and volunteers from claims arising from the inherent risks described above or from ordinary negligence.
This release does not apply to gross negligence, reckless or wilful misconduct, or responsibilities that cannot legally be excluded.
I confirm that I have read and understood this warning and waiver, have had an opportunity to ask questions and am signing voluntarily.
